Homework and Bag Policy

Introduction

Homework is an important part of school life that stimulates a spirit of inquiry, curiosity, and investigation in students. Homework supports and reinforces the understanding of learning that occurs within the classroom environment. It helps them develop important habits of self-discipline, organization, and independence. It also works towards developing critical thinkers, more confident researchers, and self-sufficient and reflective students.

Homework at Al Ain American School is used to enhance learning and reinforce the key skills and concepts that have been taught at school. This means that students will spend time at home continuing their studies. It is developmentally appropriate and provides the students with the opportunity to progress in a well-balanced and holistic way.

To be effective, home learning needs to be part of a wider partnership between parents and schools.   AAAS depends on parental support for the achievement of its objectives. Parental support and encouragement should enable the student to work independently to allow for the development of their self-management skills. Homework helps parents learn more about what their child is learning in school. It allows parents to communicate with their children about what he or she is learning.

Aims

Our aims for homework at Al Ain American School are to:

  1. Enhance learning and Reinforce key skills and concepts taught at school
  2. Encourage students to work independently and take responsibility for their own work
  3. Improve reading skills
  4. Improve critical thinking and memory
  5. Develop positive study skills and habits that will serve students well throughout life
  6. Allow students to explore subjects more thoroughly

Homework will be written in the Weekly Windows that will be posted on the school communication channels, Class Dojo, Parents Portal, and Website. Students and parents are to check to know the due date of the homework since the homework policy will take into consideration ADEK’s school bag policy.

  • School bags are to be placed in students’ lockers during school hours.
  • Trolley bags are not allowed.
  • It is recommended that a child’s school bag does not exceed 20% of their body weight to avoid adverse effects on their spine and body.
  • Parents are required to take measures to ensure that students’ school bags do not exceed the maximum weights listed in the table:

Students should abide by the homework due date for every subject to give them a chance for the teacher to cover the concept in class. Homework should not be done ahead of time. Extra pages should not be done at home.

The school understands that sometimes certain situations at home may prevent the completion of homework; notification in the diary would be appreciated. Parents will be notified by the Social Worker if a student consistently incompletes homework assignments. If students have difficulty understanding an assignment, they should communicate with their teachers regarding that. If absent from school, it is the student's responsibility to complete homework or classwork that may have been assigned during their absence.

As students develop academically, teachers expect students to take increasing responsibility for the organization of their own learning.   As a student progresses through the phases homework expectations may increase.

If a parent feels that their child needs more support, please refer to the teacher for more guidance and support.
